New Year, New Look!

One of the most important aspects to Wonderland Contraband is, of course, the charms. ^__^ This year, I wanted to have a more consistent look, size and shape to my items. Before, there was really no science to how I made my charms. But 2012 is all about finding the consistency. So, all our charms are getting rebooted! And for the better!

Better and cuter!!!

On average, our mini sculptures have grown from about 3cm to 4cm tall from tip to tip (including eyepin on top). Some might say that's not much difference but when you work on a miniscule level, this is a %25 increase in size. I decided to make them bigger because even though they weren't necessarily complaints, there were a couple of comments made last year at how surprisingly small my charms were. So they're now bigger! :P

Our mini sculptures are also double glazed in diamond gloss for extra protection. Last year, I was using a mix of matte and gloss, but I found people preferred shiny so...shiny it is! And I do like the gloss, I think it gives our charms a cleaner and brighter look.

In the next couple of weeks I hope to add more new characters in what Chris calls our "roster". This week is all about the vampires. And I do love my vampires!! Here's a sneak peak at our new Vampire Diaries charms which will be posted next weekend!

Plans for 2012

Ok, seriously. Let's get back into this blogging thing.

Wonderland Contraband in 2011 has been interesting to say the least, a lot of ups and a lot of downs, like in any small business. I'm always looking for a consistency, in sales and in my daily activities, and yet everyday is always an adventure, the outcome usually a surprise.

I've been sculpting now for about 3 years and I've learned through my experiences the best way to work with my chosen medium. And with experiences comes the drive to branch out and experiment, which is what I've been doing every chance I get this year. I created my first wedding cake topper this spring and I finally have a good handle on how to make our Bubble jewelry, which has been exciting and frustrating.

So what's next? I'm happy to say that we will be posting intricate sculptures and prints of my sculptures sometime soon. Here's a quick preview of what you'll see all over Wonderland Contraband hopefully by next year.

It's definitely on the other side of the spectrum from what anyone has seen me do in Shielou and WonCon, but I have been wanting to go down this route for a while. I feel like it's the right time to begin the transition from small charm making to something a little more challenging. Stick around, won't you? We'll see what happens....^^

Smoky Hill High School Spring Craft Fair

Took a couple hours off so my sister and I could check out our first craft fair today. :) It was at my old high school, which was uber weird. -__- But nostalgic nightmares aside, we had a blast and I ended up buying some items from several vendors and finally had a first hand experience of being in a craft fair.

Snowpocalypse

The weather here in Colorado has been so painfully freezing (-12 degrees at some point, YIKES!) that while I'm typing this I'm shivering from the cold. But that's what I get for demanding the window seat in our office. -__- I braved the weather to ship out some stuff today and also bought myself hot oatmeal from McDonald's. I'd do anything for food. Even drive in this...

(Oatmeal never looks appetizing but I assure you it is yummy!)

But enough about the snow (Damn you, SNOW!), Chris and I have some unbelievable news to impart. Our Red Riding Hood charms has made it into the hands of none other than Catherine Hardwicke who purchased them last week!

2011 is starting off AHmazingly! ^__^

Finding the Perfect Lighting

We've finally found the perfect place to take photos of our products after moving into our new place! The kitchen faces the east, so when the sun's out the kitchen glows with golden hues which is our favorite type of setting to capture images of our items. :)

We apologize for the ghastly site of our metal trash bin. We're not sure where to stuff it. Oh, well. We still love our new kitchen. :)

Wonder Woman

I didn't watch much TV while growing up in the Philippines, mostly because there wasn't any power 90% of the time. But for the few rare moments of reprieve, I watched episodes of Wonder Woman, who was amazingly played by the gorgeous Linda Carter. I miss those days. And we need Wonder Woman back!

From Angel to Damon...

I love vampires. I think everyone who really knows me have accepted, if not fully embraced this about myself. Oh well. ~__^ I'm now coming out of the closet and am freely admitting I have gone to the dark side, where their cookies are not only delicious but comes in an Ian Somerhalder shaped form. Yumm...

(Hello!! O__o Yes, please...)

Even though I was an avid Stefan supporter, Damon transformed in my eyes. Especially after watching the first season finale episode when Damon confessed his gratefulness to "Elena" for believing he was redeemable. There's something sexy about a bad boy who sees his redemption through his growing love for another person. As a true romantic, I melt at the idea of being able to help and transform a deeply angry and wounded villain to a hero of worth.

I find this strange because even if people might argue with me for what I'm about to say, it's obvious to me that Stefan is the new version of Angel and Damon is the new version of Spike from Joss Whedon's universe (ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer for those who have no idea what I'm talking about but shame on your for not knowing!). I'm an avid Buffy and Angel fan. Always have. Always will. Their love is what people have been writing about for centuries. A true Romeo and Juliet story. And as much as I adore Spike and loved his devotion to Buffy during the last couple of seasons, the relationship just didn't compare to that of Buffy and Angel's. And I thought I would feel the same way about Elena and Stefan.

I guess the difference now is that *gasp* I'm older. O__o I don't see these characters through rose tinted glasses like I did when I was in middle school. God knows how much I love the deep, brooding hero but I don't need that anymore. Angel's magnetism fit in with my tortured teenage soul. With my habit of sitting in the corner of the library and listening to Lifehouse and Evanescence. He was the type of guy who would understand my hurts and hug me and tell me all the stuff I needed to hear. But that phase of my life has come and gone.

These days I'd like to think I'm a little wiser, more content and happy, my teenage angst just an amusing memory. I like guys like Spike and Damon these days because...well, I don't need to be saved. Sure, I still have some demons but I'm old enough to deal with them without bursting into uncontrollable tears. And now at my mid-twenties, I like guys who are sensitive to my needs but also who live a little. And these boys know how to live. ~__^ They're the kind of guys who would take me out dancing in the seediest part of town but still keep me safe. They're the type of guys who would tell me truth without hesitation or any sugar coating. They're fun, reckless and blunt. But the best part about these boys is that although they're rough around the edges, there are moments when they become vulnerable, when their snarky walls come down for just a couple of minutes. Like when Spike received his soul and confessed that he won his soul for Buffy but is in agony at all his sins and drapes himself on a cross. Or when Stefan was writing in his journal about Damon and his lack of humanity just as it cuts to a scene where Damon is caressing Elena's cheek with this strange wonder on his face. Those are the times when you think that the bad boy really is worth not only of redemption but of love. :)

So yes, if I were single, I'd take Damon home any day. And Spike. :) Although, if there was an Angel/Angelus hybrid, I'd be all over that. And yes, Chris know this about myself, too. lol

Halo: Reach is OUT!

For an animator, I'm not much of a gamer despite the fact that I've always wanted to work at a game studio if not a film studio. But I do LOVE playing Halo. It's really the only video game I would happily play next to The Sims.

I do admit I draw the line at attending the Midnight Gathering that went on Monday evening for the midnight release of the game. It reminded me a bit of the Twilight Midnight Parties but with boys instead.

But still....Hoorah for Halo!

Movies I'm Looking Forward To...

There are so many films I'm looking forward to watching in the next few months so as a way to keep myself blogging, I decided to talk about them. ^__^

As a vampire fan, I can't pass up Let Me In, the American adaptation of the novel Let The Right One In by author John Ajvide Lindqvist and a Swedish film of the same name. The film is about a young boy (Owen) who is constantly harassed and bullied at school who then meets a mysterious young girl (Abby) next door who happens to be a hundred-years-or-so vampire. It stars Chloe Moretz who also played Hit Girl in the superhero film Kick Ass (which I love to bits, by the way).

I love the idea of young vampires. Psychologically speaking, any young "killer" is fascinating. But then again, this is coming from someone who wanted to be an FBI profiler. ~__^ I've always enjoyed Claudia from Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire. Forever stuck in a child's body while her mind grew, with a volatile temper and a sadistic playfulness. And I wonder if Abby will be the same or if there will be more obvious differences.

But either way, can't wait for Let Me In on October 1st, 2010!

The Choir

It's Wednesday!! And you know what that means!!! Tonight, on top of Master Chef on Fox, my most favorite show The Choir is on BBC America!!

Northolt School

For those who have no idea what The Choir is, they call it "A real life Glee". The show documents Gareth Malone trying to turn young students from British schools into a real choir. Malone is a rather small, thin man who can pass off as one of the students he teaches, but he's endearing, often geeking out about music and the untapped talents of the young schoolchildren around him. He's quirky, sincere and he'll make you want to join a choir. He'll make you root for him.

The students he often teaches come from a wide range of teenage personas. You have the rebellious, "I'm too cool for this" teens who mumble out songs in the background but still have genuine talent. And you also have the young eager pre-teens who haven't reached that cynical stage yet; And those little 12-13 year-olds are just too adorable for words.

Either way, it's a show you must definitely watch, so check out your local listings. You should not miss it!

Wrath and Rhage

I can't and won't ever stop talking about The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. I can't shut up about it and I gush about the books every chance I can get. Including now. :P Hands down, it really is one of the best, if not THE best adult vampire series around.

Zhadist and Butch

I will say that some of the heroines annoy me a bit but JR Ward's books are worth the read just for those hot alpha males. Nothing beats an arrogant, tortured but oh, so sexy man...with fangs. O__o Where can I get one? I guess I can just keep praying for one to save me from my life of destitution one day.

Vishous and Phury

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, my favorite is Vishous. There's just something hot about smart guys, especially one who understands 16 languages...or however many Vishous knows. :) I mean, the guy can seduce me in Spanish, French or African Bushmen talk, I'm all for it. But I digress....

Rhevenge

If you want a read, definitely check out the BDB series by JR Ward. You'll cry, you'll laugh...and yeah...you'll be a bit turned on, too. ~__^

Teenage Years

Let's get back into this blogging thing. ~__^ With most of everyone starting school this month (my sister just started high school today), it made me think about my own high school experience. Talk about a walk in the park. And yes, I say that with much sarcasm.

(Yay Smoky Hill Buffs?)

I wouldn't necessarily have called myself your typical high school student. If anything, I tried to do my own thing and mind my own business. High school drama was, and always will be rampant and I tried to avoid it as much as possible. I don't really know how people perceived me back then. I was a bit of a loner, I admit, living in my own fantasy world and wondering what would happen next Tuesday on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I had few very close friends but a lot of acquaintances from many cliques. I was often found in the library or art room, finishing up homework or projects. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't so anti social that I didn't TRY to participate. I was in the newspaper for a while, drawing comics. I tried to join the wardrobe department in the Drama Club but they were just too weird, even for someone like me.

I was never bullied in high school. But maybe that's because I wasn't set up in any of the levels of the hierarchy. Mostly I was just ignored, which now that I think about it was a blessing. I'd rather be ignored than traumatized. And it worked well for my anti social personality.

I guess the whole point in this blog post is that to most teenagers, high school is their entire world. Even for me, who considered herself anti high school, thought my entire life revolved around the institution. It wasn't until I finally graduated did I realize that yes, there actually was life after those four grueling years. There's an entire world for the taking after high school. So for those who feel like they're stuck in the everyday soap opera of high school, it's only four years. Then you graduate into the big leagues. Think....prime time drama. ~__^

Zombie Conundrum

Here at Wonderland Contraband, we have two very different feelings about zombies. Chris, hands down, flat out LOVES them. Or at the very least, can handle the subject with the peace and calm of a monk. Especially when he can kill them with a chainsaw and/or drainpipe. Dead Rising, anyone? ;) On the other hand, I can't abide zombies. I was barely able to get through Shaun of the Dead without having an apoplexy. And I Am Legend? Chris's right arm was a humongous bruise when we left the movie theater.

Put me in a room with vampires, werewolves, creature from the black lagoon, mummies and I'm perfectly copacetic. Leave me in a room with a zombie, and I'll happily tear off my own limbs and eat my own brains, thank you very much.

So why can't I stand zombies? The thought of ever becoming one, and worse, having to go through being brutally eaten by one are the biggies. So...zombies freak me out. And what a better way to get over that issue than to make cute little charms to try and downgrade their creepy factor? Right? ~__^

How Does Your Garden Grow #1

We're not much of gardeners. Any plants we've had have died inevitably. But once we have our own home, we would like to grow our own food. I guess this is a good start as any and should make a decent source of practice. I found these at our local supermarket. They were on sale for $1.50 each and it included the pot, seeds and soil. I've had these for about a month now and they're growing pretty well. Pat on the back!

The first one is plain old grass. I figured it was a pretty easy thing to grow, and a hard thing to kill. So if the other two died, I wouldn't feel like such a loser since I still had my grass. So....YAY! Grass! The second one is some kind of flower. I forget what kind but the picture that came with it was a massive pink/purple sunflower. I doubt those exist but visually speaking, that's what it looked to someone who is not botanical in any kind of way. This one has been the slowest to grow and quite the water hog. It almost died on me once when I didn't water it enough. -__- But I revived it despite a couple of dead leaves. :D The last ones are tomatoes. Which I'm excited about and hopefully they will actually fruit one day. They'll need to be transplanted to a bigger pot soon but they're growing nicely!

I also planted some more flowers and tomatoes in small Dixie cups. They were my backup ones in case the potted ones died. I know. I'm paranoid but I always have a backup plan. Well...where it counts. lol

Chris is a steadfast video game junkie, over all smart a** and a straight arrow shooter with no qualms about taking any pompous "jerk" off their high horse and/or bursting his significant other's bubble. The significant other is Shiela who lives in a land with unicorns and rainbows, a collection of historical romance novels with pompous "jerks" and a language that is all her own.
